Yesterday, Thursday, November 7, 2024, the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honorable Kassim Majaliwa, visited Dodoma, Tanzania’s administrative capital, to oversee the progress of the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy. This initiative, which targets institutions with more than 100 people, emphasizes a swift transition to clean and sustainable cooking energy sources across the country.

In his address, the Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to phasing out traditional cooking fuels like firewood and charcoal. “My fellow Tanzanians, we have started this campaign with public institutions as well as private institutions by setting deadlines for them. These institutions include all military areas that have over 100 people living together. They must switch to new technology by December this year,” he announced. This directive extends to the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (JWTZ), National Service camps (JKT), prisons, police academies, immigration training centers, and all educational institutions.

The government’s Clean Cooking Energy Strategy aligns with national and global efforts to promote clean energy and combat climate change. Earlier this year, Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan co-chaired the Global Clean Cooking Energy Summit in France on May 11, 2024. In her role, she committed Tanzania to advancing clean energy solutions across the continent, especially through initiatives such as the Clean Energy Programme to Support Women in Africa, which she launched at COP28 in Dubai.

These initiatives reflect Tanzania’s dedication to creating a sustainable and resilient future, and they resonate with the mission of Clear Vision for Change (CIVISCE) and other organizations working to build climate-resilient communities. CIVISCE strongly supports these efforts and calls on communities and partners to align with national policies on clean energy.

As Tanzania advances towards its clean energy goals, CIVISCE remains committed to empowering communities, promoting climate resilience, and reducing environmental impact in line with national priorities. Together, we can drive meaningful change for a sustainable future.
