CIVISCE is cognizant of the importance of meals availability in schools and strives to ensure children have the energy to focus and succeed in their studies. Literature indicates that inadequate food intake, especially with nutrient deficiencies, can result in delayed or irregular menstruation and amenorrhea. Lack of meals in schools has also been a leading factor of seduction to schoolgirls. CIVISCE initiatives under this thematic area aims at promoting increased enrollment, class attendance and better academic performance. To accomplish this, CIVISCE focuses on:
Mobilization for Local Ownership: CIVISCE engages parents, community members and community based economic self-help groups to make the program more sustainable through volunteer programs and encourages their active participation. CIVISCE also engages schools in establishing school gardens.
Capacity Building: through trainings and workshops, CIVISCE builds the capacity of stakeholders including school staff, parents’ school committees, and community members to manage and sustain the school feeding program.
Campaigns: CIVISCE conducts school feeding programs campaigns to raise awareness and mobilize resources and garner support from stakeholders.
Advocacy for Policy Support: CIVISCE recognizes how crucial school feeding program can address hunger and malnutrition in schools and thus pushes for government and institutional support to make the school feeding program a part of national policy.
